On a warm and sunny September morning, the YWCA was excited to have the Honorable Jonathan Denis, Minster of Justice and Solicitor General, welcome an excited crowd to kick off the ninth annual YWCA WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES® event.

As in years past, WALK A MILE brought a wide array of heel-blistered men; raucous costumes; energetic teams and heartfelt emotion. This event continually brings the community together for some fun and to support a great cause.

Although comical, the underlying focus of this fundraising event is heartwarmingly beautiful: men are putting themselves in vulnerable situations to step up in support of family violence.

In 2013, more than 260 women spend at least one night at the YWCA Sheriff King Home emergency shelter.   When you understand that the Calgary Police Service receives in excess of 16,000 reports of family violence each year, you realize how much more there is to do.

The support these brave men demonstrate each year, by participating in this event, shows us that individual Calgarians and organizations want to take an active role in building a healthier community. A big thank you to our sponsors, volunteers and participants for another successful  YWCA WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES®.  Look forward to seeing all of you again next year.
