YWCA to Stop Accepting Used Household Items and Clothing Donations
Drain on staff, storage and issues of health and hygiene main concerns
The YWCA of Calgary will no longer be accepting used household items and clothing donations at all locations, including the downtown housing facility and the emergency shelter, YWCA Sheriff King Home beginning October 1, 2007.

The collection of used items is taxing on the organization’s internal resources, with limited staffing and where costs associated with sorting, distributing and storing mass items can no longer be managed. Used clothing, bedding, toys, and household items also present a number of health & hygiene issues.

“We must continue to focus on our core work of assisting women and their children with issues of domestic violence, poverty and homelessness,” says Jill Wyatt, CEO, YWCA of Calgary. “Cash and gift card donations allows us the flexibility to purchase the items that are most needed, whether it’s baby diapers and formula or warm clothes and boots.”

The YWCA will continue to work with corporations or individual groups wishing to implement new toy and clothing drives. Interested parties are asked to call 294-7343 for assistance in coordinating these events.

The YWCA wishes to thank all supporters of the YWCA and invites the community to continue their support through financial support to ensure we can move women and their families out of violence, homelessness and poverty and into safe and economically stable lives.
